A great life lesson from Britney Spears. Yes, everything we want takes work. Often very hard word. Unlike the rules of Magic the Gathering, there are no golden rules in life. We can achieve great success by having a fun time and doing the things we love. The only real caveat is we have very limited time as an Earth-based space traveler to do it.
If only there were three super simple ways to live a more meaningful life!?! Oh, I’ve got you. Here are three KISS ways to fall back in love with what you do and how you spend your time.
3) Love Your Job
If you don’t love your job, there’s someone else out there who will. Seriously. They’ll work harder, later and will learn more to do a better job. If this doesn’t sound like you, you might be working to make ends meet. Considering you and I will work at least 90,000 hours over a lifetime, that a lot of time doing something we love or hate.
[Definition – Making ends meet: dead-end, soul sucking, meaningless job. Only useful as part of the journey towards what you really want to do].
So how do you get a job you love or love the job you’re in? Well, your “job” should be your passion personified into a company where you can make a difference by sharing your unique set of skills. Not everyone is creative, able to organize or can dust like a boss. You do something that no one else does. Figure that out, and find the best place to do it.
Tip: Don’t quit your crappy job until you figure out the next steps. Otherwise, you may put a lot of unneeded stress on yourself and if something doesn’t happen right away, you could find yourself in a downspin.
2) Be the Expert
Being an expert is easier than ever thanks to the internet. It just takes a little ingenuity on your end to actually learn and get better at what you do. Find online videos, free tutorials, free courses, paid lessons, follow experts on Twitter, Google it, whatever the heck you can do to get better at what you do best.
In my own career, I have to be ninja at marketing and magnet art (our product offering). When it comes to marketing, I need to stay up-to-date on what’s trending, relevant and what our target market loves. Being a magnet artists means I spend hours skill building, which includes its fair share of winning and rage quitting. But, all of that time and effort culminates into something I’m proud of (Guinness World Record and my own magnet art collection).
Tip: Anything is possible, but you actually have to do it.
1) Stay Scrappy
The world changes quickly, so quickly that if you don’t keep learning, loving what you do, and focusing on your goal(s), you’ll get left behind by people who are. Staying scrappy isn’t really advice as much as it is a way of living. If an opportunity comes, do you take it or do you swap it with excuses? If you’ve done something wrong, do you let it demotivate you or does it push you to try harder? Even though you’re just one person, do you think you can change the world?
Scrappy people believe in their ability to be the change they want to see in the world. They do this by inspiring other people, building new helpful technologies and setting ridiculous goals that they actually achieve step by step.
Don’t be afraid of what people say about you, their opinion about you is their own problem. Worry about what you want to accomplish in life and why. If you don’t leave the world a better place, then who will? You’re a unique being, with that power comes great responsibility.
Don’t take our word for it…
“Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter” – Francis Chan
And if you didn’t notice based on the Magic the Gathering card intro photo I created, I respect Britney Spears a lot for coming out with this song. Literal, keep it real lyrics. Reality, check. Important note, I didn’t get permission to use the photo of Britney or the Magic the Gathering logos. So if you’re thinking of suing me, email me and I’ll take it down.
